Chitosan
Stop fat from being absorbed into your body.
Chitosan is a naturally occurring substance that is chemically similar to the plant fiber called cellulose. Unlike plant fiber, Chitosan possesses a positive ionic charge that can achieve remarkable results – the ability to attract digested fat, cholesterol, heavy metal and toxic substances, which are negatively charged into a large mass. The whole mass will then be eliminated, preventing them from being absorbed into the blood stream.
Chitosan is suggested to have several potential dietary or clinical applications:
- As a soluble dietary fiber, it may increase gastrointestinal lumen viscosity and retard emptying of the stomach, creating a sense of satiety.
- It alters bile acid composition, increasing the excretion of sterols and reducing the digestibility of ileal fats.
- Chitosan is relatively insoluble in water, but can be dissolved by dilute acids, which would make it a highly viscous dietary fiber. Such fibers might inhibit the uptake of dietary lipids by increasing the thickness of the boundary layer of the intestinal lumen.
- Having very few acetyl groups, chitosan contains cationic groups. This may cause chitosan to have bile acid-binding capacity, which causes mixed micelles to be entrapped or disintegrated in the duodenum and ileum. This would interrupt bile acid circulation, causing reduced lipid absorption and increased sterol excretion.
Weight Management
According to research reports, Chitosan is known as the best and most effective, safe and hygienic way for weight reduction, as there are no side effects at all. Pharmaceutical grade Chitosan can absorb 10 to 12 times its weight. Food grade Chitosan can bind 4 to 6 times its weight. Clinical studies show that Chitosan’s effectiveness can be almost doubled by taking Vitamin C with it.
Cholesterol Reduction
Clinical studies have shown that in five weeks, total cholesterol can be reduced by 32% when using Chitosan. What is even more exciting is that the beneficial HDL cholesterol, which keeps the arteries free of atherosclerotic plaque, had been shown to increase by 7.5% after five weeks. The studies also show that triglyceride levels were reduced by 18% in the same period.
